Author's Argument (Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristoff & Sheryl Wudunn)

Precis:
In the book, Half the sky: chapter 1-5, (2008), the authors uses different examples and scenerios to expose sex slavery and how women are victims. They appeal to pathos, ethos and logos.

Vocabulary:
Recalcitrant: hard to deal with, manage, or operate
Empirical:practical; based on experience.
Impediment:obstruction, hindrance, obstacle
Impunity: exemption from punishment.
Methamphetamine:central nervous system stimulant drug that is similar in structure to amphetamine
Unperturbed: to disturb, agitate.

Tone:
The tone of chapter1-5 is sympathetic and informative.

Rhetorical Strategies.
1. Colloquialism: "Many of the prostitutes are freelancers working as, ding-dong xiaojie" (6)
2. Exposition: "China has more prostitutes than India- some estimates are as high as to million or more-but fewer of them are forced into brothels" (5-6)
3. Rhetorical question: what policy should we pursue to try to eliminate that slavery? (26)
4.Telegraphic sentence: "it didn't work." (8)
5. Paradox: "The red-light district in the town of Forbesgunge does not actually have any red lights. Indeed, there is no electricity" (3)

Discussion questions.
1. Why does the authors provide pictures in the novel?
2. How many victims of sex trafficking was interviewed?
3. Why did the authors use Meena Hasina- a indian muslim- and other characters as an example?

Interesting, memorable quotation.
"The tool to crush modern slavery exist, but the political will is lacking. That must be the starting point of any abolitionist movement" (24)
